The Estate Cleanout Playbook: Clearing a Connecticut Home in One Weekend

August 11, 2026 · 7 min read

Multiple Summit Carting dumpsters staged and ready

Estate cleanouts are emotional marathons disguised as logistics problems. Having hauled the debris side of hundreds of them across Fairfield and New Haven County, here's the system that gets families through in a weekend instead of a month.

Before the dumpster arrives

Walk the house with three colors of sticky notes: keep, donate, toss. Decide fast and don't relitigate. The single biggest time-killer in estate work is re-deciding the same item three times.

Pull documents and valuables first. Wills, deeds, photos, jewelry. Do this before anyone else helps, so nothing important rides out in a donation box.

Book donations before demo day. Furniture in good shape moves through Goodwill, Habitat ReStore, and local charities, but pickup slots book out a week or more. Schedule them for Friday; dumpster for Saturday morning.

Size the container for the whole house, not the visible mess

A typical full-house estate cleanout fills a 30 yard (19×6×8 ft, 9 to 10 pickup loads, $799 with 3 tons included). Smaller condo or apartment estates fit a 20 yard. Basements are the great deceiver: decades of storage compress into far more volume than the upstairs suggests. When torn, size up; the $200 jump is cheaper than a second rental.

The two-day sequence that works

Saturday: heavy and bulky first while energy is high. Furniture, mattresses (heads up: $25 each), appliances, carpets. Load the container's floor evenly, walk items in through the swing door end, and stack flat things vertically like books, not horizontally like pancakes.

Sunday: boxes, closets, kitchen, garage. Keep one "unsure" corner in the garage; whatever's still there at 4 PM goes in the box. Break down anything hollow. Fill voids with soft items. A well-packed 30 yard holds a third more than a chaotic one.

Keep the container until you're actually done

Your rental includes 7 days, and extra days are only $10, so don't rush the last sweep-out. When it's full, call us at (203) 268-3739 and we'll haul it; if there's more house than container, a swap-out gets a fresh box on the same footprint. Book the container online and the hardest part of the weekend is handled in two minutes.
